18.10.2024 Norelco to supply close to 100 low voltage switchboards to Kesko’s logistics centre in Hyvinkää
Norelco will deliver approximately 100 low voltage switchboards to the logistics centre under construction in Hyvinkää. The agreement was concluded with Terawatt Oy in the autumn of 2023. The logistics centre will be used by Onninen, Kesko’s technical wholesaler, as well as K-Auto.
Terawatt provides electrical building services solutions. In the Hyvinkää project, the company is responsible for the electrical work of the logistics centre’s main building and the entire outdoor area. “This is a very significant project for us: it is currently one of the largest construction projects in Finland. Electrification solutions play a major role in the operations of the logistics centre,” says project manager Heikki Penninkangas from Terawatt Ltd. Strong, Finnish Norelco chosen as switchboard supplier Choosing the right switchboard supplier has been one of the key decisions in the project. “When selecting the switchboard suppliers, we considered even a two-supplier model, especially due to the scope of the project. However, as the competitive tendering progressed, it became clear that Norelco has a solid financial position, which is complemented by a wide and high-quality product range. They also have the necessary high-quality design expertise the project requires,” says Penninkangas, listing the selection criteria. Penninkangas visited Norelco in February 2024. At the same time, he learned more about the design and production of the equipment that will be delivered to the logistics centre. “I was accompanied by our site supervisors because it was important for us to familiarise ourselves with the production and the equipment early on in the process. This and the installation instructions that were supplied with the main distribution boards have made our work particularly smooth, according to the feedback I received from the site,” Penninkangas says. From design desk to production In addition to Norelco’s extensive product range, Terawatt appreciated the company’s capability to design and manufacture large switchboards. According to Penninkangas, the company carefully familiarised themselves with the electrical plans for the logistics centre. “In cases like this, the design engineer must have strong expertise and experience. When the power is switched on, there should be no heating or other problems that could cause disruptions in power distribution,” he says. Olli Mutikainen was in charge of engineering at Norelco, and Penninkangas also thanks him for his interaction and guidance during the engineering phase. “In addition to him, Markku Mikkonen and the entire Norelco team have impressed us with their expertise and ability to work with us as a partner who openly shares their knowledge and information. We at Terawatt appreciate this,” says Penninkangas. Significant order for Norelco “The project is large, and the number of switchboards is significant: we will deliver over 10 NorPower 5000 switchgear units and several dozens of different types of distribution panels, such as NorPower 1250 and NorLine 800, to the logistics centre being built in Hyvinkää,” says Markku Mikkonen from Norelco. Forty NorCase distribution cabinets will be sent to Hyvinkää for electric vehicle charging stations. NorCase is an excellent solution for outdoor power distribution due to its size, strong and durable structure, and versatile equipment options. Mikkonen says that deliveries are underway and will continue well into the autumn. Additional services to speed up installation work in Hyvinkää The agreement includes additional services from Norelco that enhance both project management and installation work. “The logistics centre is enormous. Norelco’s additional services reduce installation time, as we deliver the fuses with the switchgear and configure the relays already at the factory. This saves time and avoids unnecessary movement on the construction site,” Mikkonen explains. Practice has shown that, for example, configuration and testing of arc fault and protection relays are often done hastily towards the end of the project. Norelco has developed the service according to the lean model so that the work is already done at the factory. “Configuration also requires equipment and software that must be acquired separately. Norelco’s experienced testing personnel can take care of the reminders and carry out configuration in advance at the factory,” says Mikkonen. The logistics centre’s initial floor area will be over 85,000 square meters. Construction work began in October 2022. The logistics centre will be completed in stages between 2025 and 2030.
