25.3.2026 KSS Rakennus Oy relied on Norelco’s expertise – the NorUnit power distribution unit supplies electricity to the Mäkikylä heat pump plant in Kouvola
Norelco’s extensive experience as a substation builder proved crucial for KSS Energia’s heat pump plant project in Kouvola, which required a specialised power distribution solution. Cooperation on green transition projects is set to continue.
Flexibility and ease of commissioning were key factors in KSS Rakennus’s selection of the power distribution unit for the heat pump plant under construction in Kouvola. The solution also required medium-voltage switchgear and transformers with different voltage ratings to be housed within a single enclosure.
“Norelco has a NorUnit power distribution unit that made all this possible. The company presented us with a clear plan demonstrating that the solution met our criteria. When the delivery schedule also aligned with the construction timeline, the decision to proceed was straightforward,” explains Markku Puranen, Area Manager at KSS Rakennus.
Norelco’s Sales Manager, Anssi Kautonen, is pleased with the joint project, which highlighted the company’s expertise as a designer and manufacturer of turnkey substation and power distribution solutions.
“The standardised NorUnit power distribution unit offers a convenient solution for the customer. The E‑House–type solution is manufactured and fully tested at our factory before being transported to the site by lorry. On site, only the final connections are required, after which the system can be commissioned,” Kautonen says.
“A ‘painless’ process from design to production”
Norelco received KSS Rakennus’s order in mid‑June 2025. The order comprised a 40‑foot power distribution unit, including medium‑voltage switchgear, two transformers and low‑voltage switchgear. Project Engineer Samuli Saari, who oversaw the project’s progress, describes the process as “painless”. “The initial information provided by the customer helped the project get off to a smooth start, and we were able to order and receive the critical materials on time,” Saari recalls.
Production also progressed according to plan. The switchgear assemblies for the power distribution unit were manufactured at Norelco’s Nätki and Itäväylä factories in Savonlinna, after which they were transferred to the production line for final assembly of the unit. “Our electrical and production design teams handled their responsibilities proactively, which in turn facilitated the work of our installers. Credit is also due to the client, who delivered the distribution transformers to our factory as agreed,” Saari adds.
Details fine-tuned during the factory visit
KSS Rakennus was also pleased with Norelco’s communication, as the customer was kept informed at every stage of the project. “We provide a weekly bulletin that allows the client to see exactly how the project is progressing. Samuli also ensured that we stayed on schedule. In addition, the client took the opportunity to visit our factory,” Kautonen notes.
Around a week before the delivery of the power distribution unit, following the factory visit, some minor adjustments were made to the order. “I consider it good practice to review the order together before it is delivered to the site. An exchange of ideas brings added value to both parties,” Puranen says.
“Works as it should”
The power distribution unit was delivered to the site in November 2025, five months after the order was placed. “When everything proceeds without major issues, the delivery time is exactly as specified,” Kautonen summarises.
Puranen also praises the smooth execution of the project. “Nothing caused us any headaches, even though we were working on a relatively tight schedule and Norelco was in its busiest summer period. The power distribution unit has been tested in practice, and it works exactly as it should,” Puranen says.
Green transition projects continue
The heat pump plant—which upgrades waste heat from treated wastewater into district heating—is set to be commissioned in spring this year. Puranen and Kautonen note that harnessing waste heat as part of the green transition is becoming increasingly common. “In modern power distribution, there is a growing emphasis on energy production solutions that place less strain on the environment,” they emphasise.
Further collaboration on green transition projects is also on the horizon. According to Puranen and Kautonen, a new proposal is already underway. “Norelco is a reliable partner that delivers on its promises. In addition, the company’s products offer an excellent price–quality ratio,” Puranen says. “We have mutual trust. When it comes to larger substations, the partnership must work both ways,” Kautonen concludes.
