From Student to Supervisor – How Norelco Academy Opened the Door to Working Life Already During the Summer

Juuso Heikkinen boldly seized an opportunity and transitioned from student to his first supervisory role through Norelco Academy. A summer job in Savonlinna opened doors to professional growth and strengthened his career aspirations.

When Juuso, a third-year student of electrical and automation engineering at South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences, began looking for a summer job in the spring, his sights were initially set on Kuopio. Norelco was already familiar to him through his studies, so he applied as part of the company’s summer recruitment. However, an unexpected opportunity soon arose: a summer supervisor position in Savonlinna. Although it was his first supervisor role, Juuso decided to take on the challenge.

“I’ve been interested in leadership roles for a long time. When the opportunity came up, I thought it was the perfect time to see how I’d manage,” he says.

Variety and Human Interaction Make the Work Meaningful

The daily life of a summer supervisor has been anything but monotonous – quite the opposite. According to Juuso, the variety of tasks and constant interaction with people have made the job especially rewarding. “The best part is getting to do many different things and being in contact with people all the time. It brings energy to every day.”

Thanks to a good onboarding process, Juuso quickly got a clear understanding of his responsibilities. One of the summer’s most significant moments came when he realized he could manage completely independently: “One day I realized I could handle situations on my own. I no longer needed a mentor by my side. That was a great feeling and a big step forward.”

An International Team Brings New Perspectives

The Savonlinna work community is multicultural, and English is part of daily communication. This was no problem for Juuso – quite the opposite: “I’ve been in multicultural environments before, so it felt natural right away. We’ve had a really nice team, and the collaboration has gone smoothly.”

Summer Job Boosted Confidence and Clarified Career Goals

Over the summer, Juuso’s vision for the future became even clearer. “Working as a supervisor has been rewarding. This experience has strengthened my desire to continue working in responsible and versatile roles.”

In the end, he encourages other students to confidently embrace opportunities: “Definitely apply if you’re looking for diverse work and a great team!”

Norelco Academy Combines Learning and Practical Work

Juuso is also part of Norelco Academy – a unique collaboration model that combines practical work tasks with studies in electrical and automation engineering. The model is implemented in cooperation with Norelco, Samiedu, and Xamk.

Norelco Academy offers young people a concrete path to grow into professionals in the field already during their studies. It allows them to gain hands-on experience in working life and progress in their educational path all the way to an engineering degree.

Juuso’s summer as a supervisor in PU4 is a proof of what happens when courage meets opportunity – and how Norelco Academy can be a real part of career development and support studies.
