23.1.2024 Norelco reinvents power distribution in energy projects: NorUnit power distribution unit
The NorUnit power distribution unit developed by Norelco is a new way of distributing electricity smoothly and cost-effectively in industrial processes and the electricity network. The ready-to-use power distribution unit is manufactured at Norelco’s factory and tailored to the customer’s needs. NorUnit will be on display, for example, at the Sähkö electricity trade fair from 7–9 February 2024 in Jyväskylä.
The NorUnit power distribution unit is an installation-ready full-scope solution for energy distribution and monitoring that comes as a compact and efficient package. NorUnit can be used for power distribution in solar power plants, electrolysis processes, transformers, EV charging and switching substations.
Easier design and installation thanks to a new concept
NorUnit is based on a modular container in which Norelco designs and completes a full power distribution system: the switchgear, electrical panels, control panels and automation as well as different auxiliary systems are instantly ready to go on stream. The unit can also be equipped with a distribution transformer.
Norelco has developed a new, more straightforward concept for power distribution, listening to customers’ changing needs.
“The unique package we have developed provides our customers with a more complete, and at the same time cost-effective, full-scope solution. The new concept makes design, production and installation work more efficient. One factor behind the development work was the increased demand for electrification in renewable energy projects,” says Managing Director Ari Hämäläinen from Norelco.
NorUnit is a factory-made standard product that is tailored to the customer’s application
“NorUnit makes it possible to design large systems efficiently and to deliver them as a ready-made package for the customer’s project. While NorUnit is Norelco’s factory-made standard product, it is designed and implemented with the customer’s application in mind,” Hämäläinen stresses.
NorUnit can be commissioned very quickly. The power distribution system has ready-made interfaces to the process’s or electricity network’s actuators and sensors. The factory-made, configured and tested solution saves both money and construction time.
The NorUnit power distribution unit has proven to be an excellent solution in the energy shift. The units delivered to solar power plants, for example, can be equipped with a 690/800 V LV switchboard, an intermediate transformer and 24 kV MV switchgear.
“The standardised, modular solution enables replicability, which also makes expanding the site more efficient,” Hämäläinen says.
Norelco has also developed, together with MSc Electronics, a NorUnit solution for the electrolysis process of hydrogen production plants: the unit takes care of both power generation and automation and monitoring. Read more here.
NorUnit is a flexible solution also for refurbishing or expanding a system
he NorUnit power distribution unit is also a good solution in situations where an existing power distribution system is being replaced or expanded and the operations cannot be shut down for the duration of the refurbishment: the power distribution unit is delivered to the worksite and the cabling is installed, minimising the power outage caused by the changeover to the new system.
NorUnit comes with everything cost-effectively completed and safely in place
“The NorUnit power distribution unit provides excellent switchgear packing density, which saves costs,” Hämäläinen says.
The NorUnit power distribution unit is equipped with the required MV and LV switchgear. The unit can be compartmentalised and equipped with lighting, air conditioning and auxiliary power systems. NorUnit can also be equipped with automation and remote monitoring solutions, fire detectors, motion sensors and temperature alarms required for building monitoring.
Thanks to its solid structure and HVAC technology, the power distribution unit is dry, dust-free and well air-conditioned, which makes it safe for sensitive equipment and users. The building permit procedure for a container-based solution is often lighter and the expenses required for the foundations are lower compared to traditional buildings.
